18th Century Bible
This Bible was originally bound in the 18th century, but is an amalgamation of biblical text blocks. The metal plates and leather spine piece are applications from the 20th century. The boards hold the original blind tooling. Metal pieces decorate the four corners of each board, as does a diamond metal piece in the centre and two long rectangular pieces at the hinge used to secure the spine piece.
My treatment method:
Removed the metal pieces to refurbish the boards
Conserved the leaves in the Bible that needed paper conservation
Sewed the newly conserved leaves into the book block
Sewed new hand-dyed headbands suited to the age and style of the Bible to add structure
Rebuilt the cords and rebacked the spine
Reattached the metal pieces and refurbished the Bible as a whole
